CartographerWit, Frederick de (1629 or 30-1706)

NotesSee Stokes "Iconography" for date. Also see the frontispiece in Volume I. Watercolor of this print. Stokes, Vol. VI, p. 20, illus., plate 83. Date shown is 1672. Stokes accepts Wieder's statement that this is a printed or "engraved prototype of the Visscher view." He indicates that it might have been first printed to provide one of a number of city views or plans for decoration around a large wall map. This sort of view could well have been reprinted up through the eighteenth century. See "Mercator's World."
