Stokes accepts Wieder's statement that this is a printed or "engraved prototype of the Visscher view." He indicates that it might have been first printed to provide one of a number of city views or plans for decoration around a large wall map. This sort of view could well have been reprinted up through the eighteenth century. See "Mercator's World." |
