Ritual food vessel fang ding
Object Name
Ritual
food
vessel
fang
ding
Description
This
bronze
ritual
food
vessel
fang
ding
(rectangular
ding)
is
supported
by
four
flattish
legs
in the
form
of a
dragon.
The
four
sides
of the
vessel
are
primarily
decorated
with
embossed
taotie
designs
(animal
mask
designs)
against
a
background
of
carved
leiwen
(thunder
patterns)
spirals
and
huiwen
(key
fret
patterns).
The
upper
part
of
each
side
is
adorned
with a
band
of
stylized
dragon
designs
against
a
background
of
key
fret
patterns.
Eight
evenly
spaced
heavy
and
notched
flanges
are
attached
to
each
side.
Inside
the
vessel
there are
four
raised
indistinctly
written
characters
"wen
wang
bao
ding"
(precious
ding
owned
by
King
Wen
<?-1043
BC>
of the
Western
Zhou
dynasty?).
The
shape
of this
vessel
bears
much
resemblance
to a
fang
ding
excavated
in
1976
from the
Fu
Hao
tomb
,
Anyang
, in the
Henna
Province
and
dated
to the
Anyang
Period
of the
Shang
dynasty
(c.1300-
c.1030
BC).

But
,
evidently
the
Fu
Hao
piece
appears
more
exquisitely
ornamented
with
more
superior
workmanship.
Originally
this
bronze
fang
ding
was
regarded
as a
Song
copy
of a
Han
dynasty
piece
by the
donor
Mr.
John
H.
Hampshire.
However
,
when
taking
a
close
look
at the
worn
off
bottom
of
each
flattish
leg
, the
original
brass
material
used
to
produce
this
vessel
can
be
clearly
seen.
Such
a
fact
demonstrates
this
vessel
is
a
recent
product
made
no
earlier
than the
Qing
dynasty
(1644-1911).
This
is
because
bronze
vessels
dated
to the
Song
dynasty
or
earlier
are
exclusively
made
of
red
copper;
those
brass
'antique'
vessels
are
undoubtedly
recent
copies
according
to a
book
titled
gu
wan
zhi
nan
(Guide
of
Chinese
Antiques)
written
in
1942
by
Zhao
Ruzhen
, a
prestigious
modern
connoisseur.
