About the Collections
Asian Art
Over the years, many faculty, alumni and friends donated Asian art materials to the College and to the Library. The largest gift to this growing collection came from Dr. Frank H. Kramer (1886-1963), a graduate of the Class of 1914 and a member of the Gettysburg faculty from 1920 to 1956. In June 1948, Professor Kramer announced that he would begin teaching a new course entitled "Appreciation of Oriental Art" and, for the next eighteen years, he used both the College's collection and his extensive personal collection in teaching his classes. In 1963, Prof. Kramer bequeathed his collection to Gettysburg College.
Today, Prof. Kramer' works of art are housed in Special Collections along with previous and subsequent gifts, all known as the Asian Art Collection. The collection consists of porcelains and other ceramics; works in jade, ivory, wood, and metal; textiles; works on paper; and books.
Stuckenberg Map Collection
The collection, a gift of John Henry Wilbrandt Stuckenberg (1835-1903) and Mary Gingrich Stuckenberg (1834-1934), consists of over 500 separate maps and atlases from the 16th through the 19th century. A few of the cartographers represented in the collection are: Willem Jansoon Blaeu (1571-1638), Matthaus Seutter (1678-1756), and Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777).
