| Description | Charles George Gordon was a British army officer, known as "Chinese George" who commanded troops in China and Africa. He served in the Crimean War, where he was injured and was present at the Capture of Peking by the French and British Armies in 1860. Gordon seved in various capacities throughout China, Turkey and Africa, even being asked to oversee the formation of the Congo Free State, which he accepted but was never approved by the British govenment. He was sent to Sudan in 1884 to procure its independence. Inadequately supported and reinforced by the British troops, Gordon was beheaded in 1885 after a siege of Khartoum, Sudan by troops of Mahdi Mohammad Amed. |
